Chris Gamble had an appalling 2010 season. He missed five games with hamstring, and ankle injuries, while apparently falling out of favor with then coach John Fox. Gamble was also benched that year against Cleveland for missing a practice for what he called "personal reasons". "We were 2-14; it was just a bad year" Gamble said. "So I'm just trying to stay positive. I cant worry about the negative stuff." John Fox was eventually let go by Jerry Richardson, and then entered new hire Ron Rivera. Rivera immediately sat down with Gamble to talk about the upcoming season without mentioning the past, at all. "I sat him down and told him 'you're our number 1 corner'. We want to put you to the challenge and we believe you can do some things. But I think also we've got to help you with the pass rush. And I think that's helped him." Rivera said. Gamble has all but shut down almost every receiver he has been against this year. He started off the season making Larry Fitzgerald a non factor in the Arizona game, and kept Calvin Johnson out of the end zone in the game at Detroit. Now in his 8th season in the league Gamble has turned himself into a very smart, and heady player, and has always had great ball skills to go along with his great size for his position. Alot of Gambles game is based on his mindset. In 2010 his confidence was all but shot, especially after being benched. This year he came into the season with a whole new mindset that he was going to succeed, or die trying, and he has more than succeeded expectations surrounding him this season. Don't believe me? Take a look at this stat. In 348 passing plays Quarterbacks have only targeted Gamble 52 times, and he has only given up 22 receptions. Quarterbacks throwing into his coverage only have a passer rating of 48.4 (second only to Darrelle Revis' 45.4). That is a mind boggling statistic, and might make Chris Gamble one of the most underrated players in the league right now. Will Chris Gamble make the Pro Bowl? Honestly, in my unbiased opinion I think he should make it just based on the statistic that I just referenced above. Even Josh Freeman all but admitted before his game last week against the Panthers that while he will still go through his progressions he has to make sure he knows where Gamble is on the field at all times. Thats how talented, and great he thinks Gamble is, and it also demonstrates that he basically wanted to avoid him if at all possible. There are probably only about 3 CB's that I would put with Gamble as on par with him this year in the NFC. That is Brent Grimes, Carlos Rogers, and Asante Samuel. The Pro Bowl rosters will be announced tonight, and I certainly hope Gamble makes it, but even if he doesn't he has had an outstanding year.
