As the NBA lockout continues in a soap opera type atmosphere another development has now come into play. As many as 50 NBA players came together for a conference call with an anti-trust lawyer to discuss how the decertification process would work. Some of the players who participated in the conference call were Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Grant Hill, Dwayne Wade, Dwight Howard, Russell Westbrook, Blake Griffin, Al Horford, Deandre Jordan, Tyson Chandler, and Jason Kidd. The players interest in decertification could be a huge blow for everyone involved. It basically insures that the players are not going to go down from their last proposal of 52%, and if you combine that with some of the hard line owners who actually want to go below 50%, and David Stern, whom has the proposal at 50%, but is very adamant about not going any higher than you have disaster. In order for the decertification to even take place 30% of the union would have to sign a petition to even request a vote. The case would then be taken to the National Labor Relations Board which would have right at 45 days to decide on whether or not the vote can even be hold. However, during those 45 days Billy Hunter, and David Stern could continue to negotiate, which is why some believe that the players threat of decertification, even if they do indeed follow through with it is nothing more than a threat to the owners as the two sides can still negotiate while the process is ongoing. Its quiet obvious that if the full process of decertification does indeed go through than the NBA season is lost, which could devastate the league at a time of record ratings. Perhaps another reason to treat the threat of decertification as nothing more than a threat is Hunter still states that is in the back of his mind as a last resort. The "big 7" agents who represent a majority of the players in the league firmly believe that decertification process if followed through would force Stern, and the owners to bargain much more fairly during the 45 day period where the National Labor Relations Board decide on whether a vote can be held. Conventional wisdom tells me that the two sides need to put egos, and pride aside and meet in the middle. Just ten days ago there was nearly a deal in place, and now its about to completely blow apart. Tomorrow afternoons talks will be a sure indicator on whether or not we have an NBA season this year.
Will be blogging about everything from the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Bobcats, and College Basketball. @NCSportsBlog
